6/29/2023 0 Comments Farm City by Novella CarpenterFreyfogle describes as an agrarian mode of life in which humans, as members of the land community, are “just as dependent as other life on the land’s fertility and just as shaped by its mysteries and possibilities” (Freyfogle, in: Freyfogle (ed) The new agrarianism: land, culture, and the community of life, Island Press, Washington, DC, 2001, p. In her memoir Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer ( 2009), Carpenter’s story of small family farming, indeed, evokes what Eric T. In this essay, I examine how Novella Carpenter, while paying dutiful homage to the American agrarian ideal, diverges from dominant agrarian discourse’s rural-centricity when she (trans)plants both the practice and the art of cultivation to an inner-city abandoned lot. 6/29/2023 0 Comments The Wine of Angels by Phil Rickman(With Graham Nown) Mysterious Derbyshire, Dalesman (Clapham, North Yorkshire, England), 1977. The second thing you need to know, however, is that this is not some fringe underground chapbook: it won the Governor General’s award-the highest Canadian honour for the literary arts-in a year in which the jury included Mordecai Richler, Margaret Laurence, and Alice Munro. There’s more to it than that, but why bury the lead? Not a metaphorical, figurative, concept-within-a-creature bear: a real, furry, wild brown bear. The first thing you need to know about Marian Engel’s 1976 novel Bear is that it is about a woman who has sex with a giant bear. In lieu of the blurb, here’s Sara Bynoe at Hazlitt on Bear: I can’t remember where or how I read about Marian Engel’s 1976 novel Bear, but I was intrigued. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Doctor Who by John DorneyThey’ll also discuss things that don’t work and what those extensive rewrites were probably all about.Ĭredit to Will Brooks ( for the cover image. Along the way they discuss Christianity in Doctor Who, John Dorney’s driven performance, Ian’s wrestling prowess, and the Doctor playing to the crowd. In this episode our intrepid time team discuss the setting and what they know about Alexander the Great. However, he kept his script intact, so Big Finish was able to adapt it into an audio drama in 2010. This story could have been part of Doctor Who’s first season but writer, Moris Fahri, was unwilling to undertake the extensive rewrites asked of him by the Doctor Who production office. In this episode Nathan and Juliette talk about their first true Lost Story, Farewell, Great Macedon. Urn:oclc:57332601 Scandate 20111109173800 Scanner . Can tweed jackets and elbow patches compete with chaps and spurs? You bet your sweet cow pie. But there’s also a librarian, Clark Barrow. Because Cowboy Hank is totally loin-ignition worthy. There’s a cowboy, one that ignites her loins. But romance novels always have a twist, don’t they? When a phone call brings news that she’s inherited a beautiful old home in Mendocino, California from a long-forgotten aunt, she moves her entire life across the country to embark on what she sees as a great, romance-novel-worthy adventure. And she gets to wear the bodice-don’t forget the bodice. By night, Vivian’s a secret romance-novel junkie who longs for a knight in shining armor, or a cowboy on a wild stallion, or a strapping firefighter to sweep her off her feet. SCREWDRIVERED Screwdrivered by Alice Clayton Finally, for a tie-in novel, the story has a tendency to invent new characters that feel redundant and serve either very minor roles in the plot, that could easily have been removed and streamlined. I would have really liked if some more dubious, but still understandable, acts were sprinkled in earlier (for instance if she'd secretly killed her abusive father). There is also an issue similar to (if much smaller than) the fall of Anakin Skywalker in "Revenge of the Sith", where the set-up is very slow and creeping, but then with a snap of your fingers, they're suddenly evil. Either one could have worked, but using one for some characters and the other for others (and in the case of The Odd Sisters, veering back and forth between the two) really undermines the story and took me out of the narrative over and over again. Show More settle between a fairy tale style where characters are heightened and unnamed ("the King", "the Queen", "the sisters", "the Mirror-Maker", "the Huntsman") and a more realistic tone where characters are more down to earth and named ("Verona", "Lucinda", "Aunt Viv"). 6/28/2023 0 Comments Rose gold stephanie wrobelThe voices of the two characters are compelling and the story is very readable. When Patty is released, she realises that Rose Gold’s new house is actually her childhood home, one where she experienced her own nightmares. She has a job and has saved up enough money to buy a home for her and the baby. The narrative follows the points of view of the two women as they deal with their new life and the shifting balance of power between them.ĭespite her traumatic past, Rose Gold has made many positive changes. Given this backstory, it might seem surprising that Rose Gold has agreed to have her mother back home with her and her new baby. Patty was a former nursing assistant who enjoyed the attention of medical professionals. Eventually she withdrew Rose Gold from school so she was even more isolated. She had effectively slowly poisoned Rose Gold and made her ill for most of her childhood. Patty was convicted of Munchhausen’s by proxy and sentenced to five years for the crime. Patty Watts is about to be released from prison, to return to live with Rose Gold, the daughter she abused. The Recovery of Rose Gold is an unusual story because it begins with the aftermath of a crime, rather than the crime itself. |
