This installment in the Frances franchise deals with the confidence trickster and how to deal with him, or in this case, Thelma, another girl who seems as much an innocent badger as Frances. That the narrative is carried forward through the frozen actions of a family of badgers is a brilliant stroke on their part, and advances the "Frances" brand into a difficult direction for social development. Again, as with the other books in this series, Russell (Riddley Walker, The Medusa Frequency) and Lillian (Tea and Jam for Frances) Hoban have built a clear, core narrative around an important life-lesson for their young readers, told through the simple charcoal-and pencil medium, but enhanced by a savvy use of two-colour printing to provide a comfortable, yet salient homeliness that both assures and excites.

Such a Fun Age tells the story of Emira, a young black woman who works as a nanny for a white family. “And she was saying that she’s used my novel to point out to editors that if this person is doing humour that is literary fiction, why can’t I do it too? The premise that literary fiction has to be a drag – it’s just so silly.” When we talk, she’s just out of a virtual session with another writer. But the thing that pleases her most, a year on, is the growing sense that the book is becoming a bit of gamechanger. But long before the sun will rise, the square of plastic starts to shine with a gray light. I don't know how much time passes before the window begins to brighten. We're just two creatures in the darkness. Through the cabin wall, through the stillness of the night, we must feel each other waiting. I hope it's my night-black raven, come home at last from his wandering. Or a deer that will flee in a moment, crashing through the forest in leaps and bounds. I always think of the worst things first. These are things from my nightmares, and they loom in my mind in a terrifying cycle. I've heard them stirring in their coffins. We've heard them singing, every night a little closer. Is it the grizzly bear? I can imagine it standing huge and shaggy right beside the cabin, just the thickness of the wall away. It's staying as still and silent as I am, both of us listening. I've learned many things about the forest and the sea, and many things about myself. When the sun went down, I felt like screaming. I used to be scared all the time, and nights were the worst. But then, through the dark, comes the fluttery sound of his breathing, and I feel safe to know that he's near. I can't see Frank, and for a moment I'm sure that he's gone. I can't see the ceiling or the walls of the cabin. I lie staring through blackness, listening for every sound from the forest. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Daughter of the sun warriorThe stunning sequel to the Sunday Times bestselling Daughter of the Moon Goddess delves deeper into beloved Chinese mythology, concluding the epic story of Xingyin – the daughter of Chang’e and the mortal archer Houyi – as she battles a grave new threat to the realm, in this powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and hope.
